Finds text in any field of a record. You can tell Dynodex to look in only one field, in just the phone or phone key fields, in the first line, or in every field. The find text can be a word, a group of words, or any part of a word.
If you have selected records, "Find" only searches through the selected records. If no text is found that matches what you have entered, your Mac will beep.
Used in conjunction with "Change", the "Find" command allows you to replace the "Find What" text with other text that you type in the "Change To" box.
In the Dynodex DA, "Find" works the same way as it does in the full application. Whenever you need to quickly locate a number, just open the DA and press Cmd-F to find the record you need.
You can set both the application and the DA to automatically open with the Find dialog.
** 2 Shortcuts to Finding a Record:
1> Press Cmd-Shift + the first few letters of the business or last name you are seeking. (For example, to find "Portfolio Systems" quickly, press Cmd-Shift + "por". If there is another record that begins with "Por", Dynodex will find the first record with the characters you typed.)
2> Click in the "Just Names" or "All Fields" list on the record you want to bring up. Dynodex will find that record and display it in the entry screen.
Wild Cards: If you don't know the exact word you want to find, but you know most of the characters, you may use ?'s as wild card characters in the find string. For example, if you type "C???man", Dynodex will find Cartman, Chapman, Clubman, etc.
"Find" Dialog:
• Find What: Type the text you want to find in this text box.
• Change To: Type the text that should replace the "Find What" text.
• Search In: Click in this pop-up list of all fields and drag to the field or set of fields you want to search in.
• Whole Word: Click in this check box to search for the "Find What" text as an entire word, not as part of a larger string of characters. For example, if you ask Dynodex to find all instances of “Sam” as a "Whole Word", it won’t stop at larger words which contain "Sam", like “Samuel” or "Balsam".
• Match Upper/Lowercase: Click in this check box to find only exact matches of the find text in terms of upper and lower case letters. For example, if you ask Dynodex to find “Sam” and match upper/lower-case, it won’t stop at a record with "sam" or "Balsam".
• Find: Click here to proceed to the first record containing the find text. The find text will be highlighted.
• Change All: Click on this button to automatically change every occurrence of the find text with the change text (this is a "global change"). Changes take place in the background, and Dynodex displays a dialog stating the total number of changes made.
• Add to Menu: Adds the current "Find" definition to the "Frequent Finds" pop-up list. You can save up to 256 "Frequent Find" definitions.
To find text in any record:
• Choose "Find", Cmd-F, from the Find Menu.
• Type the text you want to find in the "Find What" text box.
• Select the field you want to “Search In” from the pop-up list. (We recommend leaving this set to "All Fields", unless you are sure what field to look in.)
